COBBLERS HILL

This extended family home is set within the Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands on a north facing slope with expansive 180 degree views to the surround hills.

The brief was to design a modern farmhouse that can accommodate an extended family, whilst simultaneously providing privacy and intimacy.

The house is sited so as to optimize the views, whilst also providing shelter from the prevailing winds, and giving privacy from the surrounding properties. The approach to the house is via a winding driveway that meanders up the site, and enters into a sunken car court lined by stone retaining walls. The enclosed exterior arrival is contrasted by the entrance into the house which reveals an expansive, light filled barn like space, with views out to the horizon.

The house is configured around a one and half volume central living space and patio, flanked by two double storey bedroom wings, with a split level relationship to the main living room level.
