Parkwood, Johannesburg
Home Renovation
Completed 2018
The existing house was built in 1947, and although not a listed building, is a very good example of Johannesburg vernacular residential architecture of the period. The renovation undertook to remove previous extensions and return the house roof and front facade to its original state, with all other extensions designed to deliberately contrast the new and old.
The architectural design comprises a contemporary palette of concrete, steel and glass in order to create a visible contrast to the old house, as well as to maximise the opportunity for natural light, and visual connections to the garden.
A new double storey bedroom and garage wing was added behind the existing house in order to not detract from both the street character, as well as from the garden.
The interior design is intended to complement and preserve the character of the existing home, whilst embracing contemporary design for new additions. The existing entrance hall and lounge were restored to the original character, whilst creating a seamless connection to the new contemporary family living pavilion which includes the kitchen, dining and patio.
